Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the United
States today. Major League Baseball draws in thousands of
fans each year and people just can't seem to get enough. The
World Series has millions of viewers each year and
American's love to cheer and are very loyal to their home
team.

Baseball is known as the national pastime, and there are
many offshoots of baseball including softball and slow-
pitch. While most people won't play the real game of
baseball (pitching can be very hard to do) there are many
softball and slow-pitch leagues that are fun to participate
in.

America also has a number of leagues in baseball. Some of
the best known are the major leagues, the minors, little
leagues and more. Parents often prefer that their children
play baseball rather than the rougher sports of football
and hockey. Baseball is a game of skill and involves little
physical contact with other players. The game doesn't focus
on hitting your opponents. Kids need good hand-eye
coordination as well as patience to excel in baseball.
Without these traits they would be unable to hit a ball
traveling toward them at 50 miles per hour.

Different forms of baseball have existed around the world
so it's hard to come up with an exact history. The first
games were played in the United States in the early 19th
century, and were based on an English game known as
rounders. By the beginning of the next century baseball was
the favorite game in the country. Alexander Cartwright
built the baseball diamond as we know it today. He also
wrote the modern rules for playing.

In 1946 Cartwright and his team played the first recorded
baseball game, and the rest as they say is history. Baseball
has progressed from that game to be popular with both the
young and old, men and women. And one of the best things
about baseball or its off shoots is that you don't have to
be exceptionally athletic to play. Anyone can do it.

People are fascinated with the top players in the Major
League. Players such as Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds,
and Mark McGwire have become household names. Many kid's
want to be the next Willie Mays and spend hours playing
ball. Batting cages are also a popular past time as many
people enjoy just hitting a few balls around.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has thousands
of visitors each year. It houses artifacts from many of the
most prominent players in the American history of baseball.
There are jerseys, bats, and many other pieces of
paraphernalia. The Hall of Fame is located in Cooperstown
New York, and if you're in the area it's defiantly worth a
visit, even if you're not the biggest baseball fan. It's a
fascinating journey through America's love with baseball and
its biggest names.

All kinds of people continue to love baseball. They enjoy
playing it as well as watching it. Proff of its popularity
(were it needed) is the fact that we can even listen to
baseball songs.
